OECD DUE DILIGENCE GUIDANCE

This guidance applies to companies of all sizes and sectors who source minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas. By following these provisions, businesses can: -Minimize their contribution to harm in conflict-affected regions and high-risk areas. -Protect their reputation and brand image by demonstrating ethical sourcing practices. -Ensure long-term supply chain sustainability by engaging with responsible suppliers. -Contribute to positive change in these regions by promoting responsible mining practices. Getting Started: The OECD Due Diligence Guidance provides a comprehensive framework, but implementing it can be complex.

Conflict Minerals Reporting Template

The Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT) is a free, standardized reporting template developed by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) that facilitates the transfer of information through the supply chain regarding mineral country of origin and the smelters and refiners being utilized. The template also facilitates the identification of new smelters and refiners to potentially undergo an audit via the RMI’s Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP).

Responsible Mineral Sourcing Reporting Toolkit

The RMI and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) developed a toolkit to advance reporting on responsible mineral sourcing, to help companies report on commitments, due diligence processes and actions related to social impacts in the supply chain. The Responsible Mineral Sourcing Toolkit aims to encourage increased and improved reporting on responsible minerals sourcing, by providing an overview of key regulatory and stakeholder expectations, examples of reporting practice and relevant tools.

EU Conflict Minerals Regulation Preparedness

With the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation (CMR) going into effect January 1, 2021, obliging EU importers of tin, tantalum tungsten and gold (3TG) to source their minerals responsibly and to ensure that their supply chains do not contribute to funding armed conflict globally, the RMI and RBA developed a guidance document summarizing required and voluntary aspects of the regulation and highlighted available tools and resources to help companies meet their obligations under the regulation.

Due Diligence in the Gold Supply Chain

Customers, investors, regulators, and industry leaders are putting renewed focus on transparency of gold in the supply chain. Gold is one of the “3TG” (tantalum, tin, tungsten and gold) included in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High Risk Areas (OECD Guidance), as well as in the United States legislation (Dodd-Frank Act), and in the recent European Union conflict minerals regulation

Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA)

The Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA) contains 32 issue areas covering environmental, social and governance aspects of mining and refining operations. The RRA is widely used in the metals value chain having been formally adopted by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). It condenses over 50 international standards and guidelines into 32 issue areas and provides an online platform for companies to complete self-assessments of their performance and provide evidence to substantiate their assessment.

The Standard for Responsible Mining

The Standard for Responsible Mining v.1.0 specifies a set of objectives and leading performance requirements for environmentally and socially responsible practice. The Standard serves as the basis of a voluntary system offering independent third-party assessment and certification of environmental and social performance measures at industrial-scale mine sites around the world.

Chain of Custody Standard for Responsibly Mined Materials 2.0

This standard is designed to be compatible with other standards programs that ensure responsible sourcing of mined materials downstream of the mine (e.g., Responsible Steel, Responsible Jewellery Council). In addition, this Standard has been developed to work in concert with existing and emerging traceability services and technologies (e.g., block chain, mineral ID scanning, testing, etc.).

ICMM Human Rights Due Diligence Guidance

ICMM’s updated Human Rights Due Diligence Guidance is an important resource that will help mining companies to better integrate human rights into existing risk management approaches.
